Medway Labour Red Route Update for Rainham

Medway Labour Council Cabinet met on the 5th September to discuss amongst other matters the outcome of the Red Route Consultations. Residents will be aware from our previous response to the Rainham Red Route proposal that we are against the red route proposal for Rainham on the basis that it will not solve the increasing traffic congestion in Rainham.

The result of the Rainham Consultation was an emphatic NO with 60% of respondents against the Council's proposal for a Red Route in Rainham. Despite the overwhelming NO the Labour Cabinet approved the red route proposal for Rainham.

Cllr Andrew Lawrence commented at a time when the Council's finances are under pressure Medway Labour have decided to spend £805K on a scheme that has no hope of improving traffic flow in Rainham. Their anti-car stance is a sign of an increasing authoritarian approach by the new Labour Administration.

Cllr Jim Gilbourne added "the use of APNR cameras to monitor traffic is problematic and is currently being challenged in London as part of opposition to the ULEZ scheme. The scheme would have more credability if the Medway Labour administration at least set targets for the improved traffic flow and improvements in air quality."

Gillingham and Rainham MP Rehman Chishti has also made it clear that he is opposed to the scheme.
