Our Response Medway Council's Red Route Proposal for Rainham

Hempstead and Wigmore councillors Andrew Lawrence and Jim Gilbourne have today stated their opposition to the red route scheme proposed for Rainham.

Their objection is primarily to do with the fact the red route scheme will not improve the flow of traffic through Rainham and the use of 24 hour surveillance cameras to catch offenders.

Cllr Lawrence noted that the very slow flow of traffic at peak times is caused by traffic lights that are not properly synched from Maidstone Road to Ottherham Quay and the mini-roundabout at Holding Street. Cllr Lawrence continued “this new Labour Administration is vehemently anti-car and will do anything that it can to inconvenience car users. The use of surveillance cameras to monitor the area is another example of this new Council’s approach”

Cllr Gilbourne added “The Red Route will not improve the flow or air pollution and a more ambitious plan is needed looking at the wider area including the two carriageway M2 between Jct 4 and Jct 5, single carriageway between Rainham and Sittingbourne and impact of new house building in and around Rainham.”

The consultation closes on the 31st July 2023.
